The Konya Plain, a major agricultural region in Turkey, is facing severe hardship due to the occurrence of sinkholes that have appeared randomly.
According to reports, more than 684 sinkholes have been identified in the region. These sinkholes are more than 50 meters deep and 100 meters wide.
Scientists say that the main reason for these sinkholes is the excessive pumping of groundwater for agricultural purposes. The withdrawal of water creates voids under the ground, which leads to soil collapse.
Another common cause is the dissolution of materials such as limestone in the soil, which also tends to form sinkholes. The government and scientists are conducting research on this, and farmers have been advised to use water optimally and according to the prescribed methods.
However, scientists say that it could take decades to replenish groundwater levels.
